Working My Way Through the Menu at Relish

During this past spring I wrote a couple raves about a new hot dog and burger stand called Relish that opened in Milmont Park, PA, during the spring. It took a very busy schedule and a lot of will-power to prevent me from returning sooner, but I finally made it back there Wednesday to continue working my way through their dreamy menu.

I had sampled several styles of hot dogs and a double cheeseburger in addition to a milkshake and a mug of draught birch beer during those previous visits. Both the burger and a chili-dog were excellent, so I switched things up a bit this time and went for a chili-cheeseburger. I don’t believe I had ever had one of those before at any restaurant and was eager to discover how I’d like it.

To wash it down, I ordered a birch beer float. As explained in a previous post from my home soda-jerk series, I like my root – or birch – beer floats with the addition of a little chocolate syrup. It mixes beautifully with the soda and vanilla ice cream for a fantastic overall flavor. Thankfully, they have chocolate syrup on hand at Relish and I was able to get some on the side with my float.

The burger came out after the float and I was more than ready to dig into it. The patties at Relish are on the thin side. I prefer a double for regular cheeseburgers, but a single worked well with the layer of chili on top of it in addition to a wedge of what appeared to be Velveeta and the fried onions I requested.

This experiment was a rousing success. Of all the food items I’ve sampled so far at Relish, the chili-cheeseburger was unquestionably my favorite. The meaty chili isn’t very spicy, but it has a wonderful flavor that worked perfectly with the burger patty, cheese and onions. Everything on that bun came together beautifully for a terrific overall taste.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much that it’s going to be difficult to pass up getting another one in favor of sticking with my plan to sample as many menu items as possible when I make my next visit. That’s a pleasant dilemma though.

Regardless of how I roll on that issue, I still need to get to a couple more of their milkshake flavors and the homemade beignets. Be prepared for additional future posts on Relish.

I expect to be back Monday with a report on one of Philly’s most iconic food spots. Which one it will be depends on how the whether turns out Friday. My first choice only offers outdoor seating and the forecast is for storms as of this writing.

I live outside of Philadelphia and have been food-obsessed for as long as I can remember. After toying with the idea of starting a blog for a fairly long time, the extinction of a food-themed message board that I frequented for years prompted me to finally take action. Thank you for taking the time to check out what I've been up to - and eating. If you've enjoyed what you have read and seen, please consider clicking the "like" button and signing up as a follower.
