Juicy as Jaye P. Morgan

With the Eagles’ playoff seed locked in and the season’s final game being meaningless, my wife and I took advantage of a free Sunday afternoon to venture out to a pizza and sandwich shop that has been on my radar for a while.

Pop’s Pizzeria of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, has been receiving its fair share of online raves for both their cheesesteaks and pizza since opening in 2023. They are situated in a garden variety suburban shopping center and appear to do mostly takeout business. But they do have a few tables, and we grabbed one after ordering at the counter.

I think Frank would appreciate the food at Pop’s.

As far as what we ordered, obviously I had to sample one of their steaks. They come with Cooper Sharp cheese by default, and I requested the optional Liscio’s Bakery seeded roll along with fried onions.

Sampling a pizza was also a given. While they offer round pies and had a few at the counter for those who wanted slices, Pop’s is known to specialize in square pies. We went for a white square pizza with caramelized onions but without the ricotta cheese that would normally be on it.

I assumed that would be it for us, but my wife pleasantly surprised me by also requesting a roast pork sandwich with spinach and sharp Provolone on a seeded roll. I’m always happy to have more food items to photograph for my blog posts.

We both grabbed Hank’s sodas to wash down our lunch – root beer for me and Irish ginger ale for her. I’m not sure what makes the latter Irish. Perhaps it’s made by leprechauns.

Hank’s is a popular local soda brand in the Philadelphia region.

The sandwiches arrived first and both looked sensational overall, although I was slightly concerned about a big gob of cheese on one half of the steak. As I only intended to eat half and take the rest home, I grabbed the one without the gob.

It was a dandy.

I’ve mentioned in past posts that Liscio’s seeded rolls are a little softer and less crusty than I prefer, but this one was perfectly fresh and got the job done nicely.

The ribeye was chopped to an appealingly medium level of coarseness and seasoned well, while the Cooper Sharp was beautifully proportioned and blended in nicely with the meat – at least on the half that I ate on site. On top of that, the onions were well fried and added an extra layer to the steak’s overall flavor.

It’s tough to make such a pronouncement based on half a sandwich, but this was up there with the best cheesesteaks I’ve had in Delaware County.

My wife was equally impressed with her roast pork sandwich, which is listed as a new addition to the menu and is made with herb-rubbed roasted porchetta. I sampled a piece of the meat and it had an abundance of flavor. She also pronounced it to be as juicy as Jay P. Morgan – a reference that only those of you who are old enough to have watched the Gong Show will appreciate.

The spinach looked great and she thought it went very well with the pork and sharp Provolone.

The pizza arrived just as we were finishing our sandwich halves. In addition to the caramelized onions, it was topped with fresh basil.

A couple of my regular readers requested that I start including photos of the undercarriage when I post on pizza.

White pizza with caramelized onions has become a big favorite of mine over the past couple years – at least when the onions are truly caramelized, which hasn’t always been the case when I’ve ordered one. On this occasion, there was no such issue. The onions were a beautiful shade of brown and as sweet as one could hope for.

While I may have preferred that the crust be slightly more well done, it did have a nice bit of crunch to it and the cheese had beautiful brown spots on most of the pie.

As is usually the case with white pizza, there was also an abundance of garlic on this one, which we both viewed as a plus.

I wouldn’t hesitate to order another of these, but if I return to Pop’s, I’d like to try one of their round pies with sauce.

Now THAT’S caramelization.

There isn’t much doubt that I’d be a regular customer if I lived closer to Pop’s Pizzeria. As it is, I’m glad to have finally given them a shot and highly recommend that anyone in the area do the same.

I live outside of Philadelphia and have been food-obsessed for as long as I can remember. After toying with the idea of starting a blog for a fairly long time, the extinction of a food-themed message board that I frequented for years prompted me to finally take action. Thank you for taking the time to check out what I've been up to - and eating. If you've enjoyed what you have read and seen, please consider clicking the "like" button and signing up as a follower.

  1. Your selections and the menu look so good that I can forgive the glaring spelling error!

I’ve always heard that broccoli rabe is the preferred/traditional greens for a roast pork. Do very many places offer spinach as an option?
